Lutes Battle Bearcats to Scoreless Draw

SALEM – The Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team closed out the weekend trip to Oregon Sunday afternoon with a double-overtime scoreless tie against Willamette in Northwest Conference action.

Pacific Lutheran's record goes to 5-3-4 overall and 3-1-4 in conference play, while Willamette goes to 2-9-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the NWC. The Lutes head east next weekend for their final road trip of the season, taking on Whitman and Whitworth.

"It was a very typical Sunday game for the Northwest Conference: a very scrappy competitive battle," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "Give credit to Willamette; they worked hard and had good energy throughout the game and didn't make any mistakes."

The Lutes finished the match with a 14-8 shot advantage, but Willamette outshot PLU 5-2 during the two overtime periods. Marisa Gonzalez played a clean first half in goal for PLU before Takara Mitsui came in for the second period and overtime, making three saves. Emily Sewall went the distance in net for Willamette to earn the shutout, picking up four saves along the way. The teams combined for 35 fouls in the contest.

"We held on and got a point on the road, which is always good," Spidahl said. "Now we're off to eastern Washington next weekend."
