PLU's Lubking Strikes Out 11, Shuts Out Whitman

Box Score

WALLA WALLA - Trevor Lubking struck out 11 and walked none in a complete-game three-hit performance Sunday to lead Pacific Lutheran to a 1-0 Northwest Conference baseball win over Whitman at Borleske Stadium.

Lubking, a sophomore from Buckley, dominated the Missionaries in improving his season record to 4-0. He retired the first nine batters he faced and the side in order on five occasions.

The only time he got in any real trouble came in the fourth when a leadoff single and error put two runners on with no outs. Facing the three, four and five hitters in the Whitman lineup, Lubking got out of the jam with a pop up, a strikeout and a groundout. In the sixth the Missionaries got a runner as far as third base, but Lubking ended that threat with a strikeout.

Of the three hits Lubking allowed in his masterpiece, two were infield singles.

The Lutes scored the game's only run in the top of the third when Nicholas Hall led off with a single to center field and then moved up a base on a Whitman error. With two out Curtis Wildung drew a walk to load the bases, and Hall scored on a balk.

Pacific Lutheran, which left 11 runners on base, finished the game with seven hits including two apiece by leadoff hitter Alec Beal and ninth-spot hitter Hall.

The Lutes, 4-2 in the conference and 11-5 overall, are back in conference action next weekend when they host the defending champion Whitworth Pirates in a three-game series. The teams play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday and a nine-inning game at noon on Sunday.
