BELTON, Texas - Pacific Lutheran opened its Spring Break trip to Texas on Monday with a doubleheader sweep of host Mary Hardin-Baylor at Dee Dillon Field. The Lutes won the opener, 6-1, and came back to take the nightcap, 1-0.
Game One - PLU 6, UMHB 1
Kelsey Robinson limited the hosts to one run on three hits and also clubbed a three-run homer to back her own cause.
Robinson did not walk a batter and struck out one in the complete game effort.
PLU opened the scoring on Katie Lowery's bases-loaded single with one out in the third inning, and Robinson followed with her first homer of the season.
UMHB got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lutes came back to score two in the seventh inning on Glenelle Nitta's two-run homer.
Pacific Lutheran finished with eight hits, including two each by Nitta and Lowery.
Game Two - PLU 1, UMHB 0
Kaaren Hatlen threw a complete game one-hitter and struck out seven, and Montessa Califano delivered the game's only run with a single in the top of the seventh inning.
Hatlen was dominant throughout, allowing only four base runners the entire game. The only time she gon in any real trouble came in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff walk followed by a single, but those two were left stranded in scoring position as Hatlen retired the next three batters.
In fact, those three batters ended up being the initial three of the UMHB's final 12 batters that went down to the power pitching of the senior left-hander.
The only tally came with two outs in the seventh when Robinson led off with a walk and pinch runner Alison Behrends scored on Califano's base hit.
The Lutes finished with six hits with no batter getting more than one.
PLU plays a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. tomorrow at East Texas Baptist.
