CORVALLIS, Ore. – A pair of Pacific Lutheran pitchers saw their teams advance to the West Coast League championship series this week, with Chris Bishop and the Corvallis Knights claiming the title Monday night despite an outstanding pitching performance by Trevor Lubking for the Wenatchee Apple Sox.
The Knights picked up 1-0 win in a true pitchers' duel, as Lubking limited the home team to one run on two hits in an eight-inning complete-game effort. The PLU sophomore, who received all-Northwest Conference honors for the Lutes this past spring and earned a spot in the West Coast League All-Star Game last month, struck out four with no walks on only 85 pitches.
Unfortunately for Lubking and the Apple Sox, Bishop's Knights only needed one run to claim the victory and the two-game championship series sweep. Bishop did not appear in the championship series, but he finished the season with a 2.66 earned run average and a 5-2 record in 50.2 innings pitched over 13 appearances for Corvallis. Lubking finished the summer with a 3.43 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 55 innings. Both pitchers will be juniors for the Lutes next season.
