Corban and Concordia stifle PLU offense in Sunday sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND – The Corban and Concordia (Ore.) pitching staffs combined to limit the Pacific Lutheran offense to a total of two runs on five hits as the teams swept a pair of nonconference baseball games against PLU Sunday afternoon at Porter Park.

Corban picked up a 4-2 win over PLU in the afternoon contest, with the Warriors using a three-run fifth inning to claim the decisive lead while holding the Lutes to only two hits. The Cavaliers scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap before going on to a 3-0 shutout over the Lutes.

Chris Bishop continued PLU's string of strong pitching starts, throwing six innings while striking out nine and allowing only one earned run. Unfortunately for Bishop and the Lutes, Corban scored three unearned runs as the lead batter in the fifth inning reached on a PLU error, and the Warriors scored all of their runs in the frame with two outs.

Both of PLU's runs in the game came off batters who reached base via walk to open an inning. Curtis Wildung began the Lutes' fifth inning with a walk and scored when Collin Nilson doubled down the left field line. The next inning opened with a Bo Pearson walk, and he eventually came around to score on a Maika'I Derouin single. Those proved to be the Lutes' only two base hits in the game.

The evening matchup saw PLU come up against a red-hot CU pitching staff that extended a scoreless innings streak to 31 straight by the time the night was over. Derrick Mahlum took the loss to drop to 2-1 this season after allowing the three first-inning runs. He settled down to finish with five innings pitched and only those three runs allowed, but Jon Yearout and Austin Hadley combined to strike out 18 Lutes with only one walk in the three-hitter.

The Lutes' record falls to 5-4 this season as they head into Northwest Conference play next weekend. PLU opens league play on the road with a three-game series against Willamette. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
