Box Score PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran bounced back from its worst loss of the season to claim a 5-4 Northwest Conference baseball victory against cross-town rival Puget Sound in the series finale Sunday afternoon at PLU Field.
After UPS took the first two games of the series, the Lutes' win in the finale improves their record to 13-7 overall and 8-3 in conference play. UPS wraps the weekend with a 7-10 overall record, 5-4 in the NWC. The Lutes head to California this week for a four-game nonconference slate, beginning with a 3 p.m. matchup against Pomona-Pitzer on March 27.
Chris Bishop pitched eight strong innings to claim his second win of the season. Bishop tossed 112 pitches and struck out nine batters, pitching into the sixth inning before allowing the first hit of the game to the Loggers. AJ Konopaski came back one day after throwing 58 pitches in 4.2 innings to pitch a perfect ninth inning for his NWC-leading ninth save of the season.
Drew Oord tallied four singles in four at bats to go with a walk to lead the Lutes, while Alec Beal added three hits in the leadoff spot. Beal scored two runs and drove in another, and Jacob Clements added a pair of hits.
Pacific Lutheran put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as Beal walked to lead off the frame and came in to score on Oord's first single of the game. The Lutes added two more in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Bo Pearson doubled to left center and Kory Vanderstaay singled through the left side to put runners at the corners with two outs. Clements and Beal followed with consecutive singles to put PLU up 3-0.
Puget Sound finally broke through against Bishop in the top of the sixth, as Connor Savage singled up the middle with two outs for the Loggers' first hit of the game. Chris Zerio followed with a single to right, and Lucas Stone hit a slow chopper up the middle for an infield hit to bring Savage home and make it 3-1.
The Lutes got that run back in the bottom of the sixth and added one more as well, stringing together five hits to score two runs and take a 5-1 lead. It looked like Bishop might cruise to a complete-game win, but the Loggers would not go down easily. UPS used three hits and a walk to score three runs and pull within one going into the final frame. That gave him nine for the season, the second-most in PLU season history behind Aaron Roetcisoender's 11 in 2004.
Earlier on Sunday, the Lutes and Loggers concluded Saturday's second game, which had been postponed in the eighth inning due to darkness. Puget Sound tagged on two more runs in the top of the ninth to claim a 15-6 win and clinch the series victory. Collin Maier took the win for UPS, while Derrick Mahlum took his second loss of the season to fall to 4-2.
