Lutes softball splits doubleheader with Trinity University

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Pacific Lutheran softball split its doubleheader with the Trinity Tigers on Wednesday. The Lutes won the first game 4-2, but dropped the nightcap 2-4 to settle for the split. With the results, PLU is now 6-16 overall. Trinity advanced to 12-9.

In the early game, the Lutes took a 2-0 lead with a Spencer Sherwin RBI-single in the third and a Samantha Pryor fielder's choice bunt in the fifth that allowed Thalen Masada to score from third. However, the Tigers were able to overcome the two-run deficit in the home half of the fifth due in part to two PLU throwing errors that allowed runners to advance and the inning to continue.

With the score now tied 2-2 leading into the sixth, Katie Lowery answered back with a solo homer, her first of the season, for the go-ahead run. The Lutes would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-single by Lindsey Matsunaga to eventually take the 4-2 victory. Leah Butters collected her third win of the season, tossing a complete game and holding the Tigers to two runs, both unearned, on seven hits and one walk.

In the nightcap, it would be Trinity to strike first, putting an early run on the board in the first inning and adding one apiece in the fourth and fifth. The PLU offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Masada doubled to center field. Matsunaga followed with a single for an RBI and the rally continued with a Tori Hamura RBI-double to cut the deficit to only one run. A pop-up ended the rally for the Lutes and Trinity would add an insurance run to secure its 4-2 victory. Kelsey Robinson was charged with the loss, pitching a complete game and surrendering eight hits for four runs, one earned.

Pacific Lutheran will wrap up its Texas road trip with a doubleheader on Thursday hosted by Texas Lutheran. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. PST.
