Lutes open spring break California trip with 7-2 defeat against Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer scored the first four runs of the game and added three more in the late innings to defeat Pacific Lutheran 7-2 in the Lutes' first game of their spring break baseball trip to California Wednesday at Alumni Field.

Pacific Lutheran falls to 13-8 this season, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-14. The Lutes will take on California Lutheran Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Collin Nilson took his first loss of the season in his second start, falling to 1-1 after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Jake Otness, Cory Nelson and Kort Skoda all pitched in relief for the Lutes.

Lane Miles earned the win for Pomona-Pitzer as the first reliever in the game for the hosts. The Sagehens had eight pitchers take the mound in the contest, with starter Mark Okuma tossing two innings and all seven relievers pitching an inning apiece.

Nilson and Bo Pearson each finished with a pair of hits for the Lutes, with Pearson adding an RBI and Nilson scoring a run for PLU. The Lutes finished with five hits in the game, while the Sagehens tallied 12.

Pomona-Pitzer got on the board in the bottom of the second, with a pair of walks and a hit batsman combining with three P-P hits to put three runs on the board. The Sagehens loaded the bases again in the following frame, but Nilson limited the damage to only one run as the hosts stretched their lead to 4-0.

The Lutes broke through for the first time in the top of the fourth, with Nilson helping his own cause by hitting a one-out double to left center. He came in to score on a double to right center by Pearson, making it 4-1. PLU scored its final run in the fifth, manufacturing a run without a hit in the inning. Jacob Clements reached base on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. He came in to score with two outs on a Pomona-Pitzer error.

Pomona-Pitzer took advantage of a PLU error to bring home an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, and the Sagehens put together three hits and a walk to drive in two more in the eighth. The result gives the Lutes a 1-2 record against Pomona-Pitzer in the all-time series.
