PLU softball sweeps Puget Sound in Saturday's doubleheader

PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran softball took two on Saturday from cross-town rival Puget Sound by scores of 10-7 and 8-1. PLU improved to 12-14 in conference play, 15-23 overall while UPS fell to 1-25 NWC, 2-30 overall.

In the first game, PLU got on the board quickly with a three-run first inning, adding an additional run in the second. The Lutes led off the fifth inning with a solo homerun by Lindsey Matsunaga to bring PLU's lead to 5-0. Later in that inning, with two outs and a runner on second, Samantha Pryor hit an RBI-double for another insurance run.

The Loggers worked to decrease the deficit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lutes pulled ahead further in the seventh with a four-run performance. UPS threatened with a loud bottom of the seventh, rallying for five-runs on five-hits to come within three of PLU, but eventually falling to the Lutes 10-7.

Leah Butters collected her seventh win of the season with her six-hit outing. Matsunaga finished game one with three-hits and four RBI. Tori Hamura went 2-for-4 with two doubles.

In the second game, PLU out hit UPS 12 to four on its way to an 8-1 victory. Kelsey Robinson tossed a complete game, allowing only one run with four strikeouts. Katie Lowery went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Samantha Pryor finished 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Spencer Sherwin also had a two-hit outing with two runs scored.

Pacific Lutheran will complete regular-season play on Sunday, hosting Puget Sound in a doubleheader at noon. The Lutes will honor their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony set to start at 11:40 a.m.
