Box Score 2 PORTLAND – It was a record-breaking day for a pair of Pacific Lutheran pitchers on Friday, as Trevor Lubking and AJ Konopaski each set a PLU season record as the Lutes swept a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark at Huston Sports Complex.
Lubking pitched eight innings in the day's first game, reaching 103 strikeouts on the season with his third 13-strikeout game of the season. That 'K' total leads all of NCAA Div. III and broke the PLU junior's own record of 102 in a season, set last year. In the second game, Konopaski worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam to earn his Div. III-leading 12th save of the season, breaking a tie with Aaron Roetcisoender's 2004 total for the PLU season mark.
Pacific Lutheran improved to 21-13 overall and 12-7 in Northwest Conference play with the wins, defeating Lewis & Clark 6-2 in the opener and 7-3 in the finale. The Pioneers fell to 9-25 overall and 3-17 in the NWC. The teams close out the weekend three-game series Saturday, with first pitch set at 12 p.m.
Lubking was in control for nearly the whole game as he pitched his fifth double-digit strikeout game and fifth game of at least eight innings pitched this season. He limited Lewis & Clark to five hits while shutting the hosts out for the first seven frames before they broke through for two runs on three hits in the eighth. Konopaski struck out two in the ninth to give PLU 15 strikeouts in the win. John Trupin took the loss for Lewis & Clark, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings.
Curtis Wildung cranked his third home run of the season, while Collin Nilson and Shawn Abe each doubled for the Lutes. Tyler Thompson wrapped the first game with three hits. A trio of Pioneers tallied two hits, with Andrew Traver and Bradley Lezak each doubling in the opener.
PLU got on the board in the third, as Abe opened the frame with a double and scored on Nilson's double to go ahead 1-0. The Lutes added another in the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of L&C errors in the inning. Thompson reached on an error, advanced to second on a single by Ben Welch and scored on another Pioneer fielding miscue.
The Lutes picked up two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, tallying three hits in each frame. Nilson opened the fifth with a walk, and a Wildung single put two on with no outs. After Kory Vanderstaay sacrificed the runners forward, a balk brought Nilson in to score and Wildung scored on Kit Banko's single. Both of PLU's sixth-inning runs came with two outs, with Nilson singling to left before Wildung stepped to the plate and powered a homer to right center.
Lewis & Clark strung together three hits with a PLU error in the bottom of the eighth to score two runs, and the Pioneers got one hit off Konopaski in the ninth before the PLU closer induced a fly out to seal the win.
Chris Bishop took the mound in the second game and nearly matched Lubking's performance from earlier in the day. Bishop tossed eight innings, giving up only one earned run on six hits, with nine strikeouts and two walks. Bishop came in to start the ninth, but consecutive L&C singles to open the inning ended his day. Cory Nelson took over and walked the only batter he faced, and the Lutes called on Konopaski to step in with the bases loaded and no outs. Pitching in his second game on Friday, Konopaski prompted a double-play groundout and clinched his record-setting save with a strikeout.
Abe led PLU with three hits, including his second double of the day. Garrett Brown and Nicholas Hall also doubled, with each driving in a pair of runs, and Alec Beal tallied two hits and a pair of RBI. Traver led the Pioneers with two more doubles, while Alex Heimbrodt took the loss on the mound for L&C after yielding six runs – with only one earned – on eight hits and five walks in six innings.
Lewis & Clark took the lead in the bottom of the first, as the Pioneers' first batter of the game reached on a PLU error and came in to score on a single a few batters later. The Lutes got that run back and more in the top of the second. Drew Oord opened the inning with a single, and after the Pioneers retired the next two batters the Lutes took advantage of a Lewis & Clark error to plate four runs. Welch reached on the error to put two on, and Brown doubled to bring both runners home. Abe followed with an RBI double, and he scored on a single to right by Beal.
The Pioneers scored another unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Traver doubled with one out and scored two batters later on the Lutes' second error of the game. PLU manufactured a run in the top of the fourth. Welch led off with a walk, and Abe singled down the right field line to advance him to third. Beal's fielder's choice groundout scored Welch from third to make it 5-2. Another L&C error cost the Pioneers in the fifth, as Nilson reached on an error, stole second and scored on Hall's double down the left field line.
The Lutes' final run of the day came courtesy two more L&C errors in the top of the ninth. Oord and Vanderstaay reached on consecutive miscues, and after Oord stole third Hall brought him home with a sacrifice fly.
