Box Score PORTLAND – A pair of fielding miscues led to five unearned runs for Lewis & Clark as the Pioneers snapped a 19-game Pacific Lutheran winning streak in the series, defeating the Lutes 8-4 in the teams' Northwest Conference series finale Saturday afternoon at Huston Sports Complex.
The loss dropped PLU's record to 21-14 overall and 12-8 in conference play, while Lewis & Clark improved to 10-25 overall and 4-17 in the NWC. PLU takes on Willamette Sunday at 1 p.m. in an NWC makeup game down in Salem.
Collin Nilson took the loss for the Lutes, giving up four unearned runs on three hits with three walks in 1.2 innings. Ryan Strombom picked up the win for Lewis & Clark, limiting PLU to three runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Ben Welch, Drew Oord and Alec Beal each tallied two hits for the Lutes, while Nilson hit a home run and drove in two runs. Eric Hyun, Bradley Lezak, Corey Davis, Conner Sick and Hayden Higger all finished with two hits for the Pioneers. Higger drove in three runs and Sick drove in two.
Lewis & Clark got on the board right off the bat, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A PLU error kept the inning alive with two runners on and two outs, leading to all four runs. The Lutes got three of those back in the top of the third. Tanner Bogart led off with a single, and one out later Alec Beal singled to put two on. Oord drove in the first run with a single through the right side, Nilson made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly, and Curtis Wildung dropped a single down the right field line to make it a one-run game.
The Pioneers stretched their lead back to four runs in the top of the fourth, as Beck led off with a double and both Hyun and Higger each drove in runs with singles. Each team added a run in the eighth. Nilson hit his team-leading fourth homer of the year in the top of the frame, and the Pioneers took advantage of another PLU error to score an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.
