Lutes fall to No. 1 Linfield in Northwest Conference doubleheader

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Linfield pitching staff limited the Pacific Lutheran offense to one total run as the top-ranked Wildcats swept a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader, defeating the Lutes 3-0 and 7-1 Saturday afternoon at Roy Helser Field.

The losses dropped Pacific Lutheran's record to 16-11 overall and 8-5 in the NWC, while Linfield improved to 23-3 overall and 16-1 in conference play. The final game of the series is set for Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Trevor Lubking was the Lutes' tough-luck loser of the first game, pitching an eight-inning complete game while allowing three earned runs on six hits. Lubking struck out nine Wildcats and walked three on 130 pitches while falling to 4-2 this season. Chris Haddeland earned the win for Linfield, going the distance to improve to 7-0 after limiting the Lutes to five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Jake Wylie was the big hitter for the Wildcats, with a home run in the first game and two more in the second to finish the day with three homers and four runs batted in. Alec Beal finished the day with four hits for the Lutes, including three in the second game.

The Wildcats scored twice in the second inning of the opener and added one more run in the sixth. They broke through in the bottom of the fourth in the second game, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead in a game they went on to win 7-1.

Zach Brandon picked up the win in the second game for Linfield, pitching seven innings of one-run ball to improve to 5-0. Chris Bishop took the loss for PLU, falling to 3-4 this season after allowing four earned runs in seven innings. The Lutes' lone run of the day came in the top of the sixth inning. Nicholas Hall led off with a single to center, advanced to third on a groundout and single and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Ben Welch.
