Lutes open 2014 season with scoreless draw against Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team went head-to-head with four-time defending SCIAC champion California Lutheran for 110 scoreless minutes to claim a season-opening draw on a warm Friday evening at Rolland Stadium.

One year after PLU fell 4-0 to CLU at a neutral-site match in Spokane, the Lutes played the Regals even as Takara Mitsui made eight saves while playing every minute in goal. Kristin Bailey made six saves for CLU, with both goalkeepers saving a pair of shots in overtime to preserve the 0-0 tie.

California Lutheran out-shot Pacific Lutheran 13-9, with Kali Youngdahl leading the way for the Regals with five shots, including three on-goal. Kaylie Rozell finished the day with three shots, including two on-goal, while Machaela Graddy added a pair of on-target shots.

The Lutes return to action Sunday, when they will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a 1 p.m. matchup at Rolland Stadium.
