THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps got on the board with a goal in the seventh minute, and that proved to be enough as the Athenas held off Pacific Lutheran 1-0 in a nonconference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Rolland Stadium.
With the loss, Pacific Lutheran falls to 0-1-1 on the season, while Claremont improves to 2-0. The Lutes return home this week to host Evergreen at 12 p.m. on Sept. 5 and St. Thomas (Minn.) at 11 a.m. on Sept. 7.
Katelyn Faust took a pass from Darrah Shields and knocked it into the net in the seventh minute of play for the lone goal of the match. Claremont finished with a 10-5 shot advantage as the Athenas held PLU without a shot in the first period. Takara Mitsui made four saves for the Lutes, including a diving stop on a CMS shot late in the first period to keep the Lutes within one goal. Emily Hanna, Lena Moreno and Machaela Graddy all finished with shots on goal for PLU.
