Lutes and Wildcats play 110 minutes to scoreless tie

Box Score

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Takara Mitsui made a career-high 11 saves and the Linfield defense prevented the Lutes from finding the net on 23 shots as PLU and Linfield played 110 minutes to a scoreless tie on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference women's soccer action.

Pacific Lutheran, ranked No. 23 in the latest NSCAA poll, sees its record go to 15-2-2 overall and 11-2-2 in conference play, while Linfield goes to 9-5-4 overall and 6-5-4 in the NWC. The Lutes drop two points behind Puget Sound in the NWC standings going into Sunday's regular season finale.

"Overall what a great performance despite a very sloppy and muddy field," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "It was our best performance at Linfield during my time here at PLU.

PLU applied heavy pressure to the Linfield defense throughout regulation, out-shooting the Wildcats 23-11 including 15-6 in the second period. However, Linfield goalkeeper Elisa Randel made seven saves and Wildcat defenders blocked five shots to keep it scoreless and take the match to overtime. Linfield took advantage of opportunities in the overtime period to put together a 6-0 shot advantage, while Mitsui made four of her 11 saves in the 20 minutes of extra time.

Taylor Lunde led PLU with four shots, while Megan Zimmerman and Jamie Hoffman each tallied three. Emma Vukic led Linfield with six shots – including five on goal, while Sami Moellmer totaled five shot attempts. Mitsui earned her 13th shutout of the season while increasing her NWC-leading save total to 92 and her NWC-best save percentage to .929.

"We did everything but score a goal today," Spidahl said. "We had some great looks, but the surface made it hard for the final touch. Emma Vukic is a special player, and I thought we did a good job containing her today. We are looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow at Pacific."

The Lutes wrap up the regular season Sunday at Pacific, with kickoff set for 12 p.m. With 35 points, PLU needs a win and a Puget Sound loss or tie to win its first conference title since 1992. Puget Sound visits Willamette Sunday at 11 a.m.
