PARKLAND – Whitworth limited Pacific Lutheran to 16.7 percent shooting in the first half as the 20th-ranked Pirates built a big halftime lead en route to a 75-52 Northwest Conference win over the Lutes Friday evening at Names Family Court.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 5-19 overall and 2-13 in conference play, while Whitworth improves to 21-3 overall and 12-3 in the NWC. The Lutes conclude the 2014-15 season Saturday, when they host Whitman at 4 p.m.
Bailey Raines led PLU with 12 points, while Jori Hall tallied nine points and Lacey Nicholson scored seven to go with a team-best five rebounds. KC McConnell scored 21 points to lead Whitworth, while Jessica Kramer scored 10 for the Pirates.
PLU made three of its 18 shot attempts in the opening period, while Whitworth forced 15 turnovers before the break. The Pirates shot 46.9 percent during that same stretch (15-of-32) to take a 38-12 lead into halftime.
The second half saw PLU shoot 47.1 percent (16-of-34) and commit only four turnovers while out-scoring Whitworth 40-37. Raines scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, but Whitworth shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) after the break to keep pace with the Lutes and prevent any comeback efforts.
For the game PLU shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52), while Whitworth shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60). The Pirates finished the night with a 36-32 rebounding advantage and a 19-10 advantage in the turnover column.
