Whitman's late run carries Missionaries to 78-47 win over Lutes

PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran pulled within eight points with 13 minutes to play, but Whitman scored 29 of the final 36 points to hand the Lutes a 78-47 season-ending defeat in Northwest Conference women's basketball action Saturday evening at Names Family Court.

Pacific Lutheran concludes the 2014-15 season with a 5-20 overall record and a 2-14 conference mark, while Whitman ends the regular season at 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the NWC.

Madison Green-Hayward led PLU with 12 points, while Jori Hall tallied 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and Tayler Flemming scored 11 points. Chelsi Brewer led all scorers with 20 points for Whitman, while Heather Johns posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Pacific Lutheran scored the first four points before Whitman used a 9-2 run to go ahead by three. A three-pointer by Flemming tied it up and sparked an eight-point run to give the Lutes their largest lead of the night at 14-9. Sierra McGarity's jumper ended the Lute streak and began a 10-point run for the Missionaries, who never trailed the rest of the way.

Whitman led 37-28 at halftime and pushed its lead to 15 points at the 15-minute mark, One final push by the Lutes brought PLU back within eight at 49-41 following free throws by Lacey Nicholson, a three-pointer by Green-Hayward and a jumper by Flemming. But Whitman scored the next 11 points and pulled away for the win.
