Box Score PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran scored six runs in the second inning and the Lute pitching staff limited Puget Sound's top-ranked offense to six hits as No. 21 PLU defeated the cross-town rival Loggers 9-3 in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at PLU Field.
Ty Donahou picked up his second win of the season after throwing four one-hit innings of shutout ball for Pacific Lutheran. Garrett Brown and Chris Bishop each tossed an inning, with Bishop yielding the Loggers' first run of the day. Cory Nelson threw the seventh and eighth innings and allowed two runs before AJ Konopaski came in to record a perfect ninth inning.
Landon Packard finished with three hits and three runs batted in, while Brett Johnson doubled twice to lead the Lute offense. Curtis Wildung and Bo Pearson each scored two runs, and Connor Cantu drove in a pair for PLU. Alex Sierra had two of the Loggers' six hits and drove in a run to lead the UPS offense.
PLU broke through against UPS starter David Follett with six innings on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Follett hit Tyler Thompson with a full-count pitch to open the inning, and Collin Nilson doubled to center to score Thompson and put the Lutes on the board. After a lineout double play erased Nilson from the base paths and gave the Lutes two outs, the next six PLU batters reached base safely.
Johnson hit his first double of the day, and Wildung and Pearson each walked to load the bases. Cantu singled up the middle to score two, and Jacob Clements reached on a bunt single to again load the bases. A wild pitch scored Wildung and advanced Clements and Cantu to second and third, and Packard brought them both home with a single to right to make it 6-0 PLU.
The Lutes added another run in the bottom of the third. Drew Oord drew a one-out walk and scored on Johnson's second double in as many innings. That closed the book on Follett's day, as the Lutes tallied seven earned runs on five hits and three walks in 2.1 innings for the UPS starter. Joshua Zavisbuin came in to pitch the next 2.2 innings before Cole Mauter and Zak Holcomb each threw an inning of relief. Alex Wojtysiak pitched the eighth and allowed two more Lute runs on three hits.
Puget Sound picked up its first run in the top of the sixth. Chris Zerio doubled to open the inning, and a single by Nick Funyak and walk by Alex Sierra loaded the bases with no outs. Bishop induced a first-pitch double-play ground ball from Ben Jones, but Zerio scored on the play to make it 7-1.
The Loggers added their final two runs in the top of the eighth. An infield single by Ca Muramaru opened the inning, and Logan Day reached after being hit by a pitch. Sierra singled through the left side to score Muramaru, and after a Jones single loaded the bases Jordan Hirae hit a sacrifice fly to right to pull UPS within four.
Pacific Lutheran got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Wildung began the rally with a single through the right side, and Pearson followed with a line drive single to left. Cantu reached on a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice that left the bases loaded, and Wildung scored on a double-play groundout by Clements. Packard followed with an infield single to score Pearson from third, and the Lutes closed the day with nine runs on 11 hits.
PLU returns to Northwest Conference play this weekend, when the Lutes will travel to Walla Walla for a three-game series against Whitman, beginning Saturday at 12 p.m.
