Box Score PARKLAND – Ty Donahou pitched seven strong innings and Connor Cantu tallied five hits as the Pacific Lutheran baseball team defeated cross-town rival Puget Sound 6-1 in a nonconference game Tuesday afternoon at PLU Field.
Pacific Lutheran improved to 20-8 overall with the win, which also marked the 125th victory for PLU Athletics during the 2014-15 academic year to cap PLU's "Drive to 125" in honor of the university's 125th anniversary. Puget Sound falls to 12-13 overall this season. The Lutes have a weekend off before visiting UPS for a three-game Northwest Conference series April 11-12.
Following a 4-for-5 performance in Sunday's win over George Fox, Cantu went 5-for-5 Tuesday with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Ben Welch also had a double among two hits and a walk, while Bo Pearson also had two hits and drove one run in while scoring another. Frank Airey came in as a pinch hitter midway through the game and tallied two hits, while Tyler Thompson had a walk, a hit and two runs batted in.
Donahou allowed only one unearned run in seven dominant innings to pick up his third win of the season. He limited the UPS offense to five hits and two walks in seven innings with four strikeouts. Jake Otness pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
PLU got on the board in the third inning and added one run in each of the next two frames. Pearson opened the third with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. A groundout advanced the PLU catcher to third, and Jacob Bockelie walked and allowed Pearson to score on an attempted steal of second. Pearson took off for home after the Loggers threw down to second to get Bockelie, giving PLU a 1-0 lead.
The Lutes added another in the bottom of the fourth. Welch hit a two-out double to left center and scored on a single to left by Pearson. The fifth inning saw Cantu hit a one-out double to right center and score on a single by Collin Nilson.
Puget Sound scored its lone run of the day in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of two PLU errors to score an unearned run on a single by Kaulana Smith. The Lutes rebounded with three more in the bottom of the frame to take control of the game. Airey led off as a pinch hitter and knocked a single to left center, and Cantu reached on a perfectly placed bunt single. Landon Packard laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Nilson grounded out to put runners at second and third with two outs.
Thompson brought both Airey and Cantu home with a first-pitch single up the middle. Welch and Kit Banko followed with consecutive singles to bring Thompson home with PLU's sixth run of the day.
The win clinches PLU's 11th 20-win season in the past 12 years. Prior to 2004, PLU only had five 20-win seasons in its history.
