Box Score 2 CLACKAMAS, Ore. – A pair of pithing gems for Pacific led the Boxers to two wins over 17th-ranked Pacific Lutheran, as Pacific picked up 7-3 and 4-2 victories in Northwest Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Clackamas High School.
Pacific's starting pitchers Paul Wolfram and Sam Lawrence combined to pitch 16 innings with only two earned runs allowed as the duo shut down the PLU offense. The two teams closed the day with identical records of 6-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They will complete the three-game series Sunday at Hillsboro's Ron Tonkin Field, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
Brett Johnson led PLU with three hits in the first game, including a two-run double down the left field line in the top of the eighth inning. Connor Cantu also had a double among two hits in the opener. Tyler Thompson hit his second home run of the season in the second game for PLU, driving in both runs for the Lutes in the contest.
Kyle Rossman took his first loss of the season in the opener, as Pacific scored four runs in the first inning and finished with seven runs. Rossman struck out nine in 5.2 innings but allowed the seven earned runs on eight hits with six walks. Kyle Kornegay pitched the final 2.1 innings out of the bullpen for the Lutes, retiring all seven batters he faced. Cole Johnson allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings in the second game, and Leif Hansen picked up the final four outs for PLU without allowing a run.
Pacific scored the first seven runs of the opener before PLU picked up three in the top of the eighth. Wolfram pitched seven innings for the Boxers, limiting the Lutes to six hits and two walks. The Boxers scored the first run of the second game in the bottom of the third, and Thompson's home run briefly gave PLU a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning before Pacific tied it in the bottom of the frame. Two more Pacific runs in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference in the game. Lawrence went the distance for the Boxers, giving up two runs on four hits for Pacific.
