Rendon Interview
TACOMA, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran University's student-athlete wide receiver
Alex Rendon is a business major from North Bend, Wash.
Rendon was recently named the Lutes' Offensive Player of the Week after having two touchdowns on Sept. 29 against the University of Puget Sound. Through the opening four games of the season, the sophomore has caught 10 passes for 93 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his touchdowns have come since the Lutes (2-2, 1-1 Northwest Conference) have begun conference play.
Rendon started playing football when he was in second grade. His Dad was a football player, so naturally, Rendon was involved at a young age. He played both baseball and football in high school and is now dedicated to just football. Football has always been a big part of Rendon's life, he's an avid fan of the Washington Huskies and attends all the home games unless he has his own football game.
The brotherhood of the football team is what drew Rendon in to attending PLU. He found the community similar to the team bond he experienced in high school. Game days are his favorite because the team gets to show everyone what they have practiced.
"Competing with my brothers doing something I love is the best," Rendon said. "Running out onto the field hearing everyone excited for us pumps us up. It's all for the fans."
Before the season and school begins, the football team goes on a retreat called Breakaway every summer to a camp on the Washington coast. The team is able to bond for a few days before they get busy and get to know the new players. Rendon said that he has made many of his close friends through football and the summer retreat.
Rendon participates in an extracurricular club called Fellowship of Christian Athletes. FCA is a club at PLU for Christian athletes at PLU to come together once a week to discuss a passage and to relax with friends. The student-athletes discuss passages and how they relate to their lives and their sports. Teammate and club leader,
Zach Willis, introduced Rendon to the club when he was a freshman. FCA is important to him and to go spend time with his friends there. As a club, the athletes go to each other's games to support one another. He has met a lot of friends outside of football at FCA.
Long term, Rendon hopes to have a successful last few seasons of football at PLU. After graduating, he would like to be either a high school or college level coach.
