FOREST GOVE, Ore. - Rainier Schlekewey came off the bench and provided the game's lone score as the short-handed Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team extended its win streak to four with a 1-0 victory over Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Saturday.
It was an uphill battle for the Lutes (10-4, 6-2 NWC) who were reduced to 10 men after a red card was issued in the 20th minute. The game remained scoreless until the 74th minute with Schlekewey providing the game-winner off a pass from
Jaisen Zurfluh. The goal was Schlekewey's third of the NWC slate.
"I'm really proud of our guys today," said Head Coach
John Yorke. "We made a decision after the card that we were going to play aggressively in the attack and go for the win. Our guys did a great job of not only fighting and competing for the win but also executing our plan and supporting each other."
Both teams finished with eight shots with PLU enjoying a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
RJ Noll tallied the clean sheet, making two saves in 90 minutes of work. The Boxers' (1-8-3, 0-6-2 NWC) Brock Jones turned away two of the Lutes' three shots on goal.
"Our defensive effort was fantastic and it allowed us to have the ball in higher positions on the field. We had great performances by everyone and big congrats to Rainier and Jaisen for coming into the game and providing the game winner."
The Lutes have a short turnaround, facing George Fox University tomorrow at 12 p.m.
