TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team made sure it was all tricks and no treats on Wednesday evening for crosstown rival University of Puget Sound, denying the Loggers a chance to clinch the Northwest Conference title and forcing a tie atop the standings with a 1-0 win at East Field.
Â
With the victory, the two-time defending NWC Champion Lutes (12-3-4, 11-2-2 NWC) climb into a tie with the Loggers (12-5-2, 11-2-2 NWC) with one game remaining for each team in the regular season.Â
Â
The two sides battled to a scoreless opening half with the Lutes enjoying a slim 5-3 advantage in shots. PLU finally broke through in the 54
thminute with
Leah Magee netting her third goal of the season in what proved to be the game's lone goal.
"I was really happy with our team today, I thought our performance was very good especially in the second half," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "We were very good in our style of play building in the back and keeping possession of the ball. A really mature and disciplined performance against a very good team that hasn't lost in a long time."Â
Â
PLU goalkeeper
Natalie Robinson made four saves for her 10
thclean sheet of the season and the Lutes' 11
thoverall. UPS's Jamie Lange made two saves on the day as the Loggers saw their 11-match unbeaten run come to a halt.
"We scored a very good goal and created chances for a second. Would have loved that second goal but it just didn't happen but the first part of the day was to win and have something to play for going into the last weekend, which is exactly what we did. There's a lot of soccer left to be played, there's a lot of scenarios, but all we can do is focus on what we can control and worry about ourselves. Overall it was one of the best and most dominant performances we've ever had against UPS at home."Â
Â
The Lutes close out the season on Saturday, facing Willamette University on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Salem, Oregon.Â
