Women's Basketball Unseats Knights, 78-65

TACOMA, Wash. - Emma Janousek finished with a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists, powering the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team to a 78-65 victory over Warner Pacific University on Saturday in a non-conference clash inside Olson Gymnasium.

The Lutes (1-1) trailed by as many as seven points early in the contest before pulling away in the second half, leading by as many as 17 points en route to the win. The third quarter proved to be the difference maker with homestanding PLU outscoring the Knights 20-12 in that frame. PLU scored the opening seven points of the second half and never looked back, taking the lead for good on a Madison Salisbury layup with 8:18 left in the third. PLU's lead was just five points heading into the fourth and mushroomed to double-digits on a Katie Taylor three with 6:57 remaining. WPU (3-2) would stay at arms length the rest of the way, coming no closer than seven in the 13-point win.

Neither team was able to find any separation in the opening half of play that featured five ties and 11 lead changes. The two sides were deadlocked 15-15 after one quarter of play while the visiting Knights hit a layup in the waning seconds to take a 32-29 advantage in the locker room at half.

"It was a tale of two halves," said Head Coach Jennifer Childress. "I was so happy to see us come out in the second half looking to run and also getting our posts more touches. We're a better team offensively when we play inside-outside basketball."

Joining Janousek in double figures was Salisbury and Megan Drake. Salisbury tallied 12 points and eight assists, shooting six-for-eight from the floor while Drake came off the bench and chipped in 15 points and five rebounds. Taylor scored nine off the bench while Kristin Sturdivan hauled in eight rebounds.

"Our depth showed today. I thought our players coming off the bench really played well. Emma really showed grit. The game went through her on both ends of the court."

It was another big day on the glass for the Lutes, outrebounding the Knights 41-29. That rebounding edge turned into points for PLU, enjoying a 24-9 edge in second chance points and a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.

The Lutes open up Northwest Conference play on Tuesday, making the short trek across town for the Battle of the South Sound against the University of Puget Sound. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
