TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team extended its win streak to four on Saturday afternoon, steamrolling California Institute of Technology 89-56 in the opening day of the Pacific Northwest Tournament inside Olson Gymnasium.
The Lutes (5-2) came out of the gate swinging, scoring the opening eight points of the game.
Kristin Sturdivan got things going with a three on PLU's second possession of the game to spark the opening run. The Lute lead swelled to double digits on an
Anna Hurd three with 3:28 left in the opening quarter and enjoyed a 26-10 advantage after 10 minutes of play. Pacific Lutheran continued to pull away in the second quarter, taking a 48-22 lead into the locker room at half.
PLU maintained at least a 24-point lead the entire second half, making sure there was no chance for the Beavers' (4-4) to make a comeback.
Madison Salisbury collected her fifth consecutive double-double, finishing with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds, including eight boards on the offensive end in just 21 minutes of floor time.
Katie Taylor drained five threes, coming off the bench and scoring 16 points while
Megan Drake hit all five of her shots to finish with 11 points.
Emma Janousek did a little bit of everything, scoring eight points, dishing out eight assists, along with six rebounds and three steals. 14 total Lutes saw action in teh blowout win with 12 scoring points.
The Lutes shot 52.1 percent (37-for-71) from the floor and limited Caltech to shooting just 37.1 percent (23-for-62) for the game. PLU enjoyed a 47-28 rebounding advantage and held a 46-20 edge in points in the paint.
PLU is back on the court tomorrow at 4 p.m., facing Nichols College for a chance to finish the tournament undefeated for the second consecutive year. Nichols suffered a 61-39 setback to University of Puget Sound to open the tournament earlier in the day.
