McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Northwest Conference's top two goal scorers were up to their old tricks again on Sunday in Oregon. Freshman
Zak Gregg and sophomore
Keeton Heggerness both tallied their 12
th goals of the season, and it was Heggerness' goal in the 102
nd minute to propel the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team to a 2-1, double overtime victory over Linfield College.
The Lutes remained unbeaten and atop the NWC standings with the victory and improved their conference mark to 7-0-2.
"Every game in this conference is tough," said PLU Head Coach
John Yorke. "Records don't matter. Linfield is a good team and played well. In our pursuit of trying to win a conference, sometimes you have to just grind out a gritty win. Today was that kind of day. I'm really proud of the group and of Keeton who had a bit of a tough game up until that point. He did a really nice job of getting himself together and overcoming some frustrations and scored obviously a very huge goal for our team. We had big performance from
Sam Ebner today as well and once again great contributions from everyone."
Gregg opened the scoring in the 22
nd minute when
Ryan Griffith crossed a ball into the box from the right side and the freshman subsequently buried it in the back of the net. The Wildcats answered just five minutes before the halfway mark when Connor Heintz dribbled through the PLU defense and beat PLU keeper
Cole Weaver.
The game would remain tied for just over an hour until Heggerness ripped a shot from the top left corner of the box and past the Wildcat goalie.
PLU dominated regulation, shooting 18 times to just six for the home team. The Lutes had plenty of good chances as well, placing eight of the eighteen on net. Weaver made two saves in the first half to keep the game tied and came up with a big save in the first overtime to keep the game alive.
The Lutes (10-3-2, 7-0-2 NWC) return to East Field next Saturday for a huge game against second-place Whitman College at 2:30 p.m. The Lutes will close the weekend on Sunday when they welcome Whitworth University on Sunday.
