Women’s Soccer Moves to Top of NWC Standings

TACOMA, Wash. – With a 2-0 shutout victory at George Fox University on Saturday, the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team moved to the top of the Northwest Conference standings and sports a sparkling 5-0 conference mark.

"We played well," said PLU Head Coach Seth Spidahl.  "We didn't play great, but credit to George Fox they are a hard team to play at home. There's a lot of games throughout the journey and not every game are you going to play great, but you have to find ways to get results and get shutouts and score goals and we did that today.  I thought Ashton played very well in goal and our team defense was solid."

In five conference matches, PLU (7-1-1, 5-0-0 NWC) has yet to allow a goal and has shutout its last six opponents.  In nine games on the season, the Lutes have allowed just two goals.  Junior Ashton Huppert made two saves to earn her fourth shutout of the campaign.

Leah Magee, who is tied for the team lead and ranks second in the conference in goals with five, opened the scoring in the 23rdminute as she placed the ball in the top right corner.  The Lutes would carry that lead into halftime as none of the Bruins' five shots were on net.

Just four minutes into the second half, Ellie Johnson registered her first goal of the season to give PLU a commanding 2-0 advantage.  Magee assisted on the goal for her third point of the game.

With the win, the Lutes improve their road record to 5-1-1 on the season and pick up their 15thconference point.  PLU sits two points ahead of the University of Puget Sound and Willamette University, who are both undefeated in league action.

The Lutes remain on the road tomorrow when they take on the Bearcats at 12:00 p.m. in Salem.

"Tomorrow will be our toughest challenge of the season so far," said Spidahl.  "Willamette is doing well.  They are undefeated.  They are at home.  We need to work hard and get prepared for that challenge tomorrow because it will test us.
