ABILENE, Texas – The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team was all tied up with Trinity University (Texas) after 90 minutes, but the Tigers scored off of a rebound just 69 seconds into the extra session to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
"It was an extremely tough way to lose, but I'm very proud of the team," said PLU Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "The girls left it all out there today. We were really good in the first 15 minutes, outshot them 8-1 and could've had a couple of goals and didn't."
Trinity opened the scoring when Cece Hendricks took a pass from Nyah Shepherd and beat the PLU defense in the 16
th minute.
The Lutes (16-3-2) settled in and controlled the action for much of the rest of regulation, outshooting the Tigers 12-8 for the game. PLU trailed 1-0 at the half, but got on the board shortly after as Northwest Conference Offensive Player and Freshman of the Year
Meghan Michels banged in a pass from
Maddie Landreth. It was Michels' 12 goal of the season and Landreth's third assist.
In overtime, the Tigers were fouled inside the box. Kristen Canepa's penalty kick clanged off the right post and ricocheted right to Abby Blackwood who ended the game when she kicked the ball into the open net.
Michels and fellow First Team All-NWC selection
Leah Magee led the PLU offense with five and four shots, respectively. Crosswhite made three saves to keep the Lutes within striking distance.
"I want to publicly thank the five seniors: Briana Hunting,
Sarah Burns,
Alyssa Carter,
Leah Magee and
Danielle Lisk for all of their contributions," said Spidahl. "They are great people, great players and great students and that's what PLU women's soccer is all about."
