TACOMA, Wash. - There will be no sharing for the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team. After sharing the Northwest Conference title the previous two seasons, the Lutes made sure it would be an undisputed claim in 2019, downing crosstown rival University of Puget Sound 2-0 to secure the crown in Saturday's regular season finale.
"The guys were great today!" said Head Coach
John Yorke. "I could tell in the locker room that they were going to play well. They just had a really good vibe about them; loose but focused."
The Lutes (14-4-2, 11-1-2 NWC) wasted little time asserting their dominance, with
Keeton Heggerness opening the scoring in the ninth minute off a pass from
Jackson Moore. Moore would tally a goal of his own just 15 minutes later, doubling the Lute advantage in the 24th minute for what turned out to be the final score of the day.
Cole Weaver collected the clean sheet in goal making five saves in 90 minutes of work. His counterpart, Ethan Stern-Ellis made three stops while conceding a pair of goals.
"This is a really hard conference to win so I'm very proud of how they persevered this season and got the job done. To win it once is really hard but for the seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have won it now multiple times, it's really a testament to their ability, commitment, and hard work."
The Lutes and Loggers (9-7-3, 6-7-1 NWC) both finished the day with 13 shots. PLU enjoyed a 10-6 edge in the opening half while Puget Sound outgunned the visiting Lutes 7-3 in the second 45 minutes of action.
"We have some bigger goals in mind than just winning the conference though, so we're excited to get back to work on Monday."
PLU will learn its NCAA Division III Tournament assignment on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m.
