PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team capped a perfect season-opening weekend on Saturday afternoon by knocking off Multnomah University 73-53 after defeating Warner Pacific University last night.
Things were all square at 12 after the first 10 minutes of action in Portland, but a big second quarter put the Lutes up by 10, 30-20, at the break. It was an offensive explosion by both teams in the third quarter as the two squads combined for 48 points, but the PLU defense settled in when it mattered and surrendered only 10 points in the final 10 minutes.
The Lutes dominated in two categories that certainly made the difference in a second-straight road win. PLU outscored the Lions 20-7 in points off of turnovers and held a striking 24-6 edge in second chance points. For the game, PLU pulled down 16 offensive rebounds, including eight by junior center
Madison Salisbury. Salisbury scored over 20 points for the second straight game after scoring 24 against Warner Pacific in the opener. The Puyallup native had 21 to go with 10 rebounds for her second-straight double-double and shot 9-of-11 from the field.
Sophomore
Katie Taylor canned six three-pointers in 12 attempts to score a game-high 22 points. Taylor also had four steals and six rebounds for a solid floor game. Senior
Emma Janousek added 18 points, while
Hailey Marsh collected nine boards and passed out four assists.
The two victories to start the season is a first for PLU since the 2011-12 season. The Lutes will head to NCAA Division II Saint Martin's University for an exhibition game on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before heading to California next weekend to play the University of Redlands and Occidental College.
