PORTLAND, Ore. - Madison Salisbury finished with a double-double while
Katie Taylor came off the bench and poured on 17 points as the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team blew past Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College 79-62 on Sunday afternoon.
The opening quarter was hotly contested with neither team building a lead greater than five points. PLU (14-8, 7-7 NWC) finished the opening 10 minutes with a razor-thin 20-19 advantage. The game was a one-point ballgame midway through the second quarter before the Lutes mounted a 12-1 run, enjoying a 34-22 advantage with 3:29 remaining on a
Megan Drake layup.
PLU's lead would shrink at the end of the second, owning just a 37-31 edge at the halftime intermission. The host Pioneers (2-21, 1-13 NWC) whittled the gap to just one point with 3:23 left in the third but the Lutes pulled away, owning a 55-49 lead heading into the fourth. It was all Lutes for the final 10 minutes, outscoring Lewis & Clark 24-13 to finish the weekend road trip undefeated.
"I felt we found a new gear going into the fourth quarter," said Head Coach
Jennifer Childress. "Our defensive intensity and offensive execution allowed us to pull away. Our bench did an outstanding job. With the game being called closely and several of our players in foul trouble, we relied on our depth to push us through the third quarter."
Taylor came off the bench hit three treys and all six of her free throws, pacing the Lutes with 17 points. Salisbury put up 16 points and 12 rebounds while
Kristin Sturdivan added 11.
Emma Janousek was the fourth Lute in double figures with 10 points along with five assists.
Pacific Lutheran enjoyed a 35-25 rebounding edge, a 16-4 advantage in second chance points and a 34-14 lead in bench production.
The Lutes begin their final homestand of the season on Friday, welcoming Whitworth University to Olson Gymnasium with tipoff slated for 6 p.m.
