TUCSON, Ariz. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team closed out the Cactus Classic on Saturday, falling 15-5 to the University of Texas-Dallas.
The Comets (1-2) struck early, piling on five runs in the top of the first inning. The Lutes (2-2) responded with four in the bottom of the third, closing the gap to just 5-3.
Jordan Haworth singled in a pair of runs before
Max Cummings brought in Haworth with a single of his own.
UTD added two more runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth to seize a 13-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Cummings drew a based loaded walk to score Haworth but the Lutes were unable to inflict any more damage as the Comets escaped the inning before padding their lead with two runs in the seventh.
The Lutes pounded out 13 hits but stranded 12 runners on base over the course of the game.
Tori Doten and
King Jimenez-Cruz both finished two-for-three at the plate while
Andy Schmitz, Haworth, and
Austin Gormley all finished with a pair of base hits.
Tommy Snyder made his Lute debut, pitching four innings and striking out two but was tagged with the decision.
Tanner Zuber fanned three in 1 1/3 innings of relief while
Janson Pederson tossed a scoreless ninth for PLU.
The Lutes finish the Cactus Classic with a 2-2 record having faced three NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, including today's opponent UTD.
"It was a disappointing end to the trip but this weekend was a good yardstick for our program right now against some of the best teams in our region," said Head Coach
Nolan Soete. "We're looking forward to getting better next week in Georgia."
Pacific Lutheran is back on the diamond on Friday, heading to Atlanta, Georgia to face Emory University.
