Baseball Bashes Wildcats in DH Sweep

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - After struggling in its series against Lewis & Clark College last weekend, the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team came back with a vengeance against Northwest Conference rival Linfield College on Saturday, earning a doubleheader sweep with a 5-4 extra innings win in the opener before taking the nightcap 10-7.

The first inning of the day started strong for the Lutes (15-8, 7-4 NWC), with Jordan Haworth and Marques Carlson each collecting base hits. Carlson's single drove in Haworth for the first run of the day. Jacob Bockelie and Andy Schmitz were each walked, loading the bases for Max Cummings. Cummings would drive in Carlson on a fielder's choice, taking a 2-0 lead after one inning of action.

In the top of the 3rd inning, the Lutes decided to add on to their lead. Carlson walked, and Bockelie drove him in with a double. Schmitz hit a sacrifice bunt to move Bockelie to third, and a groundout from Cummings drove Bockelie in to increase the PLU lead to 4-0.

Linfield (4-16, 2-12 NWC) gained runs back in the bottom of the 6th and 8th innings, taking the game into extra innings after tying the game at 4-4. The Lutes got hits in both the 10th and 11th innings, but not enough to score.  It wasn't until the top of the 12th inning that the Lutes were able to capitalize. A Tori Doten single to left started off the inning, and gave first-year Connor Lemma a chance to show up for the Lutes, and he did just that. Lemma hit a streaking double through to left center after taking two strikes, driving Doten in to score. Lemma's heroics took the Lutes to a 5-4 lead, which they maintained through the bottom of the 12th to get the victory.

On the mound, Justin Armbruester started out the day for the Lutes, pitching 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Justin Tucker came in for long relief, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing only three hits with no runs and five strikeouts. The duo combined for 13 strikeouts in the marathon 12-inning game.

"Today was an all around team effort and it shows how resilient and strong this team is," said Lemma.  "Armbruester and Tucker did awesome on the bump and the defense was solid. It felt really good to get the winning hit and help the team out."

In the second game, the Lutes came out of the gates hot off their last win. Haworth was walked to start the first inning, and advanced to third on an error and a wild pitch. Austin Gormley drove Haworth in on a groundout to short, giving the Lutes an early 1-0 lead. Carlson was walked, and Bockelie came out and, in a way we've seen him do countless times, hit a towering home run to left center to drive in Carlson and himself, taking the PLU lead up to 3-0 before the first inning was over.

Linfield answered back with three in the bottom of the second inning, but the Lutes weren't going to give up just yet, with a sacrifice fly from Michael Cesar in the third driving in Carlson, bringing the lead back to the Lutes at 4-3.

In the top of the fourth, Doten reached first on an error, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Haworth single moved Doten to third, and while Haworth was caught on a steal attempt Doten was able to score another run for the Lutes. Austin Gormley then doubled to left, and scored on a double from Bockelie, who then scored on a single from Schmitz, putting the Lutes up 7-3.

Haworth drove in Cesar on a sacrifice fly to center in the fifth. Bockelie drew a bases loaded hit by pitch while Schmitz drove in another run after getting hit as well, taking the PLU advantage to 10-3.

The Wildcats scored four runs over the next four innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lutes who secured the doubleheader sweep.

Jacob Mortensen started out the game for PLU, pitching two innings before Matt Franceschina came in, pitching for 4 1/3 innings and striking out three to earn the win.  Janson Pederson and Justin Tucker came in to close out the game, pitching 2 2/3 innings combined to allow only two runs between them and ensuring that Linfield couldn't stage a full-fledged comeback.

"I'm proud of how the guys bounced back today," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.  "Our approach at the plate improved a lot and we played great defensively. Armbruester set the tone in game 1, he had a great outing. Tucker was excellent in big situations in both games and we were able to string together some quality at bats. Connor Lemma had a big hit in extra innings in game 1 and Bockelie had a big day at the plate as well. Overall, it was a great team effort."

The Lutes return to the diamond tomorrow, facing Linfield at 12 p.m.
