ORANGE, Calif. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches before running out of steam in singles play, falling 6-3 to host Chapman University on Thursday to close out its spring break tour of California.
Justin deMattos and
Hampus Pers Eliasson did just enough to sneak away with the win at No. 2 doubles, edging the Panthers' (4-7) Len Kamemoto and Matthew Mead 8-7 (7-3).
Jake Kim and
Branson Near prevailed at No. 3 by another razor thin scoreline, securing an 8-7 (7-5) victory while
Marcus Lee and
Michael Campbell were upended 8-3 at No. 1.
"We started out great winning two of three doubles," said Head Coach
John Campbell. "Hampus and Justin fought off three match points against them before they stepped up and pulled out a great win. Jake and Branson jumped out to an early lead and closed out the match strong!"
In singles, Lee outlasted Igor Belineli, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 4 while Campbell grabbed an early lead at No. 1 singles before ultimately suffering a, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, setback. Kim battled in a, 6-4, 6-1, defeat at No. 5 while deMattos and
Derek Stone fell by identical, 6-3, 6-1, scorelines at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
"Marcus pulled out a third set tiebreak by stepping up on big points and attacking to win. Michael also had a great three set battle at No. 1 but wasn't quite able to pull off the upset. All in all it was a great trip for team bonding and game improvement!"
The Lutes (4-8) are back in action on April 6, hosting Linfield College at the Spinker Recreation Center.
