Baseball Sinks Pirates, 5-4

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team closed out it Northwest Conference weekend series strong on Sunday, fighting for a hard-earned 5-4 victory over visiting Whitworth University.

The Lutes (17-10, 9-6 NWC), who dropped both games to the Pirates (14-11, 11-4 NWC) on Saturday, came into the day with a plan to kickstart their offense, and it didn't take long for that plan to come to fruition.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Andy Schmitz walked to start the inning, bringing up Jacob Bockelie.  Bockelie hit a soaring home run to right field, bringing in Schmitz to put the Lutes up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bockelie led off the inning with a double to right, and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Michael Cesar. A single from Cameron Clem drove in Bockelie, putting the Lutes up 3-0.

Whitworth added one in the top of the eighth, and it helped motivate the Lutes to increase their lead even more.  Bockelie was walked, and a Clem single advanced Bockelie to second. A walk to Marques Carlson loaded the bases, and King Jimenez-Cruz came up to bat.  The first-year, who came in as a pinch-hitter the inning prior, hit a double to right to drive in Clem and Bockelie. This put the Lutes up 5-1. Whitworth would score three in the top of the ninth before the Lutes stymied the rally to earn the 5-4 win.

"It felt good to come back after Having the flu and fighting through adversity," said Jimenez-Cruz.  "I'm proud of the guys and it was a heck of an outing from my roommate Tommy Snyder. It was one of the best feelings I have ever had on a baseball field hitting that ball. Go Lutes!"

From the mound, Tommy Snyder pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Lutes, striking out three batters while only allowing one run on four hits. Alex Gregory returned to the mound to close out the game for the Lutes, striking out two and earning yet another save.

"Tommy Snyder has his best outing of the year. Bockelie and Clem had some big hits and we were able to squeak it out in the ninth. Overall, it was a good team effort," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

The Lutes head out to Walla Walla, Washington next weekend to take on the Blues of Whitman College.  The first game of the series is on Saturday at 12 p.m.
