Blues Down Lutes 11-3 in Series Finale

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team was unable to pull out the win in Sunday's rubbermatch, falling 11-3 to host Whitman College to close out the three-game Northwest Conference series.

The Lutes (18-12, 10-8 NWC) struggled to put together a coordinated offensive strike, with their runs coming in three separate innings. In the top of the 1st, a single from Austin Gormley set the Lutes up for their first run on a triple from Andy Schmitz, putting the Lutes in the lead.

The runs went unanswered for the next two innings, and the Lutes added another in the top of the third on a double from Cam Clem, a single from Marques Carlson, and another double from Max Cummings. The Lutes were up 2-0, but the Blues (15-15, 10-8 NWC) got two back to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd.

In the top of the 5th, a double from Jacob Bockelie, who was intentionally walked in the first inning, set the Lutes up to take the lead. Bockelie advanced to third on a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly from Michael Cesar drove Bockelie in to put the Lutes ahead 3-2.  Unfortunately, these were the last runs the Lutes put on the board, and the Blues jumpstarted their offense.

Whitman scored 3 in the bottom of the 5th, 1 in the bottom of the 6th, and a devastating 5 in the bottom of the 7th to take the victory on the day with an 11-3 win.

"I would say moving forward that we need to improve our focus for the whole 9 innings of the game," said Senior Marques Carlson.  "When we get ahead we tend to just coast through the game, and when we're down sometimes we fall into a rut and fold over. We need to have a better approach at the plate and put more pressure on the defense "

On the mound starter Tommy Snyder put in 4 1/3 innings of work, striking out 6 while allowing 5 runs.  The rest of the game was put together with performances from Jacob Mortensen, Matt Franceschina, and Jack Hannah.

"We got out played today in all phases of the game," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.  "We will go back to work Tuesday and prepare to play better next weekend against Pacific."

The Lutes return home to PLU Field on Saturday, April 13 at 12 p.m. against Pacific University.
