TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team finishes its season this weekend, playing three games over the weekend against the Whits. The Lutes face Whitman College on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the campus of the University of Puget Sound before hosting Whitman and Whitworth the following day beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Last weekend the Lutes fell in the NWC tournament, first to top-seeded Whitworth University 5-4, and then to Pacific University, 14-3. They fought hard in both games showing resilience, just not quite enough to win. On Wednesday the Lutes took on crosstown rival Puget Sound in the annual game at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, in which they won the game 7-3.
"The atmosphere at Cheney stadium was amazing," said sophomore
Tori Doten. "There were lots of friends and family that attended which made it very fun to play. Coming out on top of Puget Sound is always a great feeling since they are our rivals. Losing to them at Cheney last year was very unfortunate, so beating them this year and sending our seniors out on a high note was very enjoyable."
Doten is finishing up his second year here at PLU, and is relishing the opportunity to play collegiate baseball at a high level in the Northwest Conference.
"My favorite part about being on this team is the comradery that we have established on an off the field. Every year there is a new team with different players and vibes. This year's vibe on the team was very positive which just further motivated the team to play well."
Doten is also working very hard in his academic pursuit, as he is majoring in biology and hopes to get into PA school and work as a physician's assistant soon after.
"My interest in this field stem from visits to hospitals from past injuries/surgeries and having a positive interaction with doctors. This has inspired me to be able to provide care and help to others."
Outside of the demands of athletics and academics, Doten really enjoys being outdoors and hanging out with friends and family.
Gormley and the Lutes are looking to end the season on a high note as they face the Whits this weekend.
