SPOKANE, Wash. - Three goals in the opening half, including two off the boot of
Jackson Moore was more than enough firepower for the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team on Saturday, sinking Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University 5-0.
Moore tallied his first goal in the 18th minute before
Zak Gregg doubled the Lute advantage in 22nd minute with his seventh goal of the year. Moore tacked on his second goal in the 27th minute as Pacific Lutheran (6-3, 3-0 NWC) enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 advantage at the halftime intermission.
Rainier Schlekewey upped the Lute advantage to 4=0 in the 50th minute with Moore collecting the assist while
Ola Kvindesland put the icing on the cake with an 84th minute score off a feed from
Jaisen Zurfluh.
PLU finished with a 15-11 edge in shots, including eight of the 12 shots taken on goal.
Cole Weaver earned the clean sheet in goal, making four saves in 90 minutes of action while Bo Broyles played all 90 minutes for the Pirates (3-5-1, 1-2 NWC), making three saves and conceding five goals.
"We came ready to play today. Our defensive efforts gave us the chance to play forward and create goal scoring opportunities," said Head Coach
John Yorke. "It was great to get another shutout. I've been pleased with our defensive efforts in the last few games. We have an opportunity for a great weekend if we can follow up with a win tomorrow."
The two-time defending NWC Champion Lutes have been utterly dominant through the opening three games of the conference slate, outscoring its three foes by a combined 12-0 scoreline.
The Lutes close out their eastern Washington road trip tomorrow afternoon, facing Whitman College at 2:30 p.m.
