Tough Third Quarter Does in PLU

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific University outscored the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team by 15 points in the third quarter on Friday night, en route to a 66-54 victory over the Lutes in the penultimate game of the 2019-20 season.

PLU led Pacific 14-12 after a strong first period and increased that lead to six after senior Kylie Rademacher and junior Megan Drake put home the first two baskets of the second period.  Throughout the rest of the first half, the score was tied on three occasions, but the Boxers took a lead they would not relinquish late in the quarter when Kaylissa Kleinschmidt hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to put Pacific up 29-26.

The Lutes scored just 10 points in the critical third quarter, while the Boxers poured in 25 to give them an 18-point lead with just 10 minutes remaining in the contest.  As they have done all season long, the PLU women continued to battle down the stretch, and cut the lead to as few as eight points when Drake drilled her second three-pointer of the ball game.  Just two minutes remained at that point, however and the Boxers hung on for a 12-point win.

PLU used a balanced scoring attack to threaten the Boxers as Drake, Rademacher, Emma Janousek and Toni Thibert all hit double figures in points.  Drake led the Lutes with 14 and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  Thibert chipped in 12, Janousek added 11 and Rademacher scored 10.

As a team, PLU was blitzed on the backboard and the Boxers enjoyed a 37-28 rebounding margin.  The Lutes shot 42.6 percent from the field, but struggled behind the three-point arc, making just 4-of-20 from downtown.

The Lutes will travel to Lewis and Clark College tomorrow for the squad's regular season finale.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
