TACOMA, Wash. - Taylor Stokes secured wins in both doubles and singles play but it wasn't enough as the Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad came up short 6-3 against crosstown rival University of Puget Sound to open the spring season on Saturday.
"Today was a great start to the spring season," said Head Coach
Cheri Campbell. "We had multiple matches that were one or two points away from having different results. Three singles lost in the third set. UPS didn't have their strongest lineup but neither did we."
Stokes and
Emma Lund picked up the 8-4 victory over the Loggers' Ainsley Nelson and Arisa Dintcho at No. 3 doubles. Stokes would additionally prevail 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 5 singles to close the day undefeated.
Sydney Cameron collected a 7-6, 6-3, win at No. 1 singles, rebounding after dropped an 8-4 decision with partner
Hannah Jeffries at No. 1 doubles.Â
Bayley Gochanour battled tough before ending on the wrong side of a, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, scoreline at No. 3 singles while
Michelle Batin fell 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, at No. 4. Lund's bid to finish the day undefeated came up just short, seizing an early lead at No. 6 singles before ultimately succumbing, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"These Lutes have been working hard at practice and it showed on the court."
The Lutes (0-2) return to the courts next Saturday, hosting Highline Community College at 1 p.m. inside the Sprinker Recreation Center.
