Lute Salute: Cameron Clem

TACOMA, Wash. - Throughout the rest of the semester, GoLutes.com will profile the Pacific Lutheran University senior student-athletes involved in spring sports that had their seasons cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today's installment features PLU baseball student-athlete Cameron Clem.

From orientation week during his first year at Pacific Lutheran University, senior baseball student-athlete Cameron Clem was making incredible memories.

A member of the baseball team, Clem couldn't choose just one favorite sports memory. He recalled the excitement of winning the regular-season Northwest Conference title in 2018, and helping the team qualify for the NWC Tournament each year.

Along the way, Clem developed important relationships with his teammates and coaches.

"My teammates have been supportive of me and great friends," Clem said. "My coaches have been supportive as well and have pushed me to always try my hardest."

That lesson from his coaches carried into other aspects of Clem's college career. Outside of baseball, Clem tutored middle school and high school students in the Parkland community. He pushed himself to be the best role model he could be for those students.

On the diamond, Clem appeared in 56 games over the past four seasons, making 30 starts. The outfielder was in the midst of his best season yet this spring, leading the Lutes with a .400 batting average through the first 13 games of the season. That hot-hitting in early spring included a three-for-three effort at the plate against 23rd-ranked Texas Lutheran University, scoring four runs and driving in two more in a 17-9 win over the host Bulldogs.

Clem's career saw the Lutes rack up 80 wins over the past four seasons, earning three trips to the NWC Tournament while winning the 2018 regular season title. Clem and the rest of the 2020 seniors won over 65 percent of their NWC games while boasting a .660 winning percentage inside the friendly confines of PLU Field.

"It has been fun to watch Cameron grow throughout his time at PLU," said Head Coach Nolan Soete. "He played on some senior heavy teams during his first two seasons and worked hard to consistently get better. Cam really blossomed into an everyday starter during his junior season and never looked back. He was having a great senior campaign, when our season ended, he was leading the team in batting average and he was second on the team in RBI. Cameron has been a great teammate during his time at PLU and he has been a pleasure to coach."

An avid comic book collector, Clem will be graduating in the spring with a degree in Business Management and a minor in Innovation Studies, and is considering attending a graduate program in the future. Wherever he ends up, athletics has taught him to persevere.

"It has shown me the value of hard work and having a good attitude," Clem said. "If something doesn't go your way it's important to keep working hard and not get too down."
