D2 Saints March Past Lutes in Midweek Exhibition

Box Score

LACEY, Wash. – An early lead proved to be unsustainable for the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team on Tuesday evening, suffering a 64-41 setback at the hands of Division II Saint Martin's University in an exhibition game at Marcus Pavilion.

The Lutes came out of the gate swinging, building an early 6-2 lead and owning a 19-16 edge after the first quarter of play, shooting a blazing 54.5 percent from the field. PLU extended its lead to six points midway through the second half but the host Saints crawled back into the game, whittling the Lute lead to just a single point at 24-23 heading into halftime.

It was all Saint Martin's in the third, outscoring PLU 29-6 to seize control of the game. The Saints shot a sizzling 70.0 percent from the floor in the third while limiting the Lutes to shooting at a 22.2 percent clip.

PLU played nearly even with SMU in the fourth but the damage was already done as the Saints cruised to the win.

Ava Edmonds paced the Lutes with 13 points, sinking all six of her free throws while also securing seven rebounds. Kasidy Javernick added 12 points while Stacie Spahr hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds.

The Lutes resume the regular season on Saturday, heading to Pasadena for a date with California Institute of Technology. Tipoff against the Beavers is set for 2 p.m.
