SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team was upended for the second consecutive night on Saturday, ending up on the wrong side of a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 25-15) scoreline against Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University.
The visiting Lutes (2-2) enjoyed a 21-18 edge in the opening set before the homestanding Pirates (3-0) came out of a timeout and tallied seven of the next eight points to secure the 25-22 set win.
The second set was deadlocked at 20 before Whitworth scored four of the next five. A Whitworth service error followed by an
Emily Dulaney ace closed the gap to a single point but a kill by Whitworth's Logan Spencer tilted the scales 25-23 in favor of the hosts.
Whitworth led 8-7 in the third before three straight attack errors and a
Lauren Wilson kill put the Lutes up 12-8. PLU never relinquished the lead the rest of the set with a Wilson kill closing out a decisive 25-14 set win.
PLU conceded the opening five points and trailed 9-2 in set four, a deficit the Lutes were unable to overcome in a 25-15 setback to give Whitworth the match victory.
Baylee Johnson headlined the Lute offense with 11 kills along with six blocks while
Lauren Wilson added nine kills.
Emily Dulaney tallied 28 assists and 12 digs while
Halle Hetzler racked up a team-high 20 digs.
Breeze Bartle finished with seven blocks while also adding five kills.
"It's a lot of fun competing against such a good team like Whitworth. We played hard all four sets and just allowed them to get too big of a run in the fourth set. We can't wait to get back to practice this week and get better for UPS and then Whitworth again," said Wilson.
The Lutes make the short trek across town next Friday, returning to the court against intracity rival University of Puget Sound. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
