SPOKANE, Wash. - The tables turned for the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer squad on Sunday afternoon. A 1-0 winner over host Whitworth University the day prior, the Lutes were unable to replicate the feat for a second consecutive day, ending on the opposite end of a 1-0 scoreline to close out the two-game series inside the Pine Bowl.
The contest's lone goal came in the 16th minute with the Pirates' (1-1) Dominic Gusman scoring off a feed from Jaime Rodriguez.
Whitworth ended the game with a slim 10-8 advantage in shots but the Lutes (1-1) held a 4-3 edge in chances in the second half of play. Seven Lutes finished the game with a shot, including
Jared Davies who accounted for both of PLU's shots of goal.
"It was great to be back out on the field in competitive NWC games," said Head Coach
John Yorke. "The weekend definitely presented a different set of challenges than a normal NWC weekend with playing the same team back-to-back."
Nicholas Gaston collected three saves in 90 minutes of work for the Lutes in goal. His counterpart, Jamison Gunhus, turned away two shots to secure the clean sheet.
"We weren't where we want to be as a group yet in how we performed this weekend but it was great to be back on the field playing."
The Lutes will be back on the road next weekend, making the short jaunt across town to face arch-rival University of Puget Sound. The two-game series begins on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
