TACOMA, Wash. – Leading by 17 points at the end of the first quarter, 16 at halftime and 15 at the end of the third, the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team cruised to a 65-45 victory over Whitworth University and swept the Pirates in the two-game weekend series.
After Whitworth (2-3, 2-3 NWC) scored on its first two possessions of the game, it was all Lutes from then on. The Pirates held a brief 4-2 lead, but then PLU went on a 28-4 run over the next 16 minutes to take a huge 30-8 lead over the visitors.
An incredible defensive effort for PLU (3-4, 3-4 NWC) held the visitors to just 2-for-16 from the field in the first quarter, and 24 percent from the field for the game. The Pirates also connected on just one of their 17 three-point attempts and committed 17 turnovers. Whitworth did not have one player reach double figures in scoring.
Senior point guard
Emma Janousek scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, collected six boards and came up with three steals.
Hailey Marsh led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds and
Toni Thibert and

Winners of three of their last four games, the Lutes will look to reach .500 for the first time this season when they host crosstown rival University of Puget Sound next weekend. Friday and Saturday's tip-offs are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
