TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches on Thursday night, erasing an early deficit to down crosstown rival University of Puget Sound 6-3 in the season opener at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
"Overall I'm really pleased with the teams play although we came out a little tight in doubles," said Head Coach
Paul Koessler.
"We settled down nicely in singles. It was the first time I got to see the guys in actual match play so I had some really good takeaways."
Michael Campbell and
Marcus Lee made quick work of the Loggers' (0-1) Mike Smolskis and Rene Del Barco, collecting the 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles but host Puget Sound took a lead into the singles portion of the dual after prevailing in matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Campbell and Lee both collected their second wins of the night. Campbell rolled past Smolskis 8-1 while Lee toppled Del Barco by an 8-3 scoreline.
Derek Stone prevailed 8-4 at No. 4 singles while
Branson Near claimed the 8-3 win at No. 5.
Samuel Kwon outlasted Ellis Murayama 8-6 at No. 6 for the Lutes' fifth singles win on the evening.
"We will need to tidy up our doubles play before we start conference. It's a great group of young men and it was great to see them get the 'dub.'"
The Lutes (1-0) begin Northwest Conference play next weekend, hosting Pacific University on March 6 at the Sprinker Recreation Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
