SALEM, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team dropped the series opener to Willamette University 16-2 on Saturday. The second game of the twin bill was suspended with the Lutes leading 15-10 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game will resume tomorrow and will be followed by two seven inning games to close the series.
Game 1
It was all Bearcats early as the home team jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings, chasing Lute starter
Justin Tucker. The Lutes tried to climb back into the game in the third when
Austin Gormley scored
Sean Kauffman on a sacrifice fly and
Jordan Haworth knocked in
Andy Schmitz with a base hit.
However, it was not to be as Willamette touched up reliever
Jonathan Cohen for four runs in the next inning and Noah Claxton-Ward for another to make the game 12-2 after three. The Bearcats hit two home runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for their final three runs.
Game 2
Things began to look up for the Lutes to begin Game 2. PLU scored three times in the first and the first four runs in the game in the first three at-bats. Haworth continued to pound the ball in the nightcap, blasting two home runs over the left field fence for five RBI.
Cole Trotignon struggled on the mound, surrendering six runs in four innings pitched, but he made up for it at the plate. The sophomore helped himself with a RBI single in the first, knocked in
Tori Doten in the fourth and doubled in Gormley in the sixth on a ball to right. In all, he was 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Alex Boyd was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored in Game 2, while Gormely also touched home three times.
Sean Kauffman also provided some power with a two-run blast in the sixth inning. In just six at-bats, the Lutes have 14 hits and scored 15 runs.
The conclusion of Game 2 will begin at noon, followed by two seven inning contests.
