TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team put forth a tremendous defensive effort again on Sunday, shutting out their fourth consecutive opponent in a 2-0 victory over Whitman College.
"I'm proud of our process today," said PLU Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "We attacked all game and certainly could have score more goals, but the players put out a very good effort. Credit to Michelle and her tactics with Whitman. They worked hard and defended well until the end. It was especially awesome to have all the seniors on the field at the end of the game. It was a very memorable moement for me as a coach. I want to thank the senior class for all their contributions to our program. They have definitely left the jersey in a better place. Outstanding people, students and players. Go Lutes!"
The Lute defense allowed just one shot in Sunday's contest, compared to 23 for PLU.
Cassidy Crosswhite and
Ashton Huppert both played a half on Sunday and neither player was busy as Whitman didn't place a shot on goal all afternoon.
In the final home game of her career, senior
Ellie Johnson got the Lutes on the scoreboard in the sixth minute as she scored her third goal of the spring. Johnson contributed to the PLU's second goal in the second half as she took a pass from
Lily Dose and sent it to
Vivian Shinall for her third goal of the spring. Shinall's goal in the 61st minute put the rest of the game on ice for the home team.
PLU caps the spring NWC season with a 6-3-1 record and have closed the year by playing their best soccer of the spring. The Lutes finish the spring campaign on a four-match winning streak, recording a shutout in all four matches.
