Baseball Steamrolls Loggers in DH Sweep

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team exploded for 28 runs over the final six innings of the afternoon, collecting a doubleheader sweep at the expense of Northwest Conference rival University of Puget Sound. The Lutes collected a 12-1 mercy rule win in the opener before steamrolling the Loggers 16-2 for another mercy-rule victory to cap off the day.

The Lutes (12-9, 8-5 NWC) got off to a sluggish start, trailing 1-0 heading into the eighth inning before exploding for 12 runs in the mercy rule shortened victory.

Sean Kauffman got things rolling with an RBI double to left field to score Ashton Barton to tie the game. An Austin Gormley single plated two more followed by an RBI single from Cole Trotignon. Jordan Haworth made it 5-1 by scoring on a wild pitch.

Alex Boyd blasted a 2 RBI single followed by a Tori Doten 2 RBI double. Kauffman notched his second RBI base hit to make it 10-1 before Gormley blasted a two-run home run to give PLU the 12-1 lead.

Haworth finished three-for-four while Austin Gormley racked up two hits and four RBIs.

Tommy Snyder struck out eight and allowed just one run in six innings of action. Alex Gregory and Spencer Howell each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.

Pacific Lutheran picked up where it left off in game two, piling on six runs in the opening inning. A Haworth double scored Gormley for the game's opening run before getting an RBI single from Trotignon, and 2-RBI singles from both Barton and Boyd.

PLU's lead grew to 7-0 in the second courtesy of a Haworth solo home run. The Loggers got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run of their own but the Lutes added four more runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to enact the mercy rule for the second straight game.

Trotignon collected an RBI double in the third while Kenton Robillard and Kauffman each drove in a run in the fourth. Robillard was back at it in the fifth with a three-run home run to left field.

Haworth finished game two with three hits and three runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Robillard was a perfect two-for-two with four RBIs while eight total Lutes collected a base hit in the nightcap.

Justin Tucker went the distance on the hill, striking out six in five innings of work, allowing just three hits.

The Lutes and Loggers (9-13, 5-11 NWC) cap off the series tomorrow with a twinbill beginning at 12 p.m.
