TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball squad asserted its dominance over its crosstown nemesis for the second consecutive day, closing out the Northwest Conference series with a sweep of host University of Puget Sound. The Lutes bested the Loggers 5-3 and 2-1 on Sunday for their first series sweep of the 2021 campaign.
The Lutes (14-9, 10-5 NWC) wasted little time getting on the board in game one, pushing across a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. A
Jordan Haworth single up the middle scored
Sean Kauffman before a
Connor Lemma single allowed Haworth to touch home plate for the 2-0 lead.
The Loggers (9-15, 5-13 NWC) answered with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. PLU tied the game in the third with a Lemma RBI fielder's choice allowing Haworth to score. A Kauffman double in the fourth plated the go-ahead run while an
Alex Boyd groundout in the sixth allowed
Armond Swanson III to score in what proved to be the final run of the game as the Lutes prevailed 5-3.
Kenton Robillard was a perfect three-for-three at the plate while Haworth was three-for-five with two runs scored.
Cole Trotignon picked up the win on the bump, tossing six innings and striking out four.
Alex Gregory notched his first save of the season and the 16th of his career, tossing three innings of long relief and fanning four batters.
Puget Sound drew first blood in the series finale, plating a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. UPS's lead remained until
Cole Trotignon blasted a two-run home run to left field in the sixth inning, scoring Haworth who reached base after drawing a two-out walk.
The Loggers threatened in the bottom of the seventh with the game-tying run 90-feet from home before
Noah Ferguson retired the final batter to preserve the win and the series sweep.
PLU mustered just four hits during game two with Haworth having his hitting streak snapped at 19 games.
Jonathan Cohen collected the win, striking out six in five innings of labor before making way for Ferguson who tossed the final two frames, allowing just one hit and no runs to net the save.
With the NWC series sweep, the Lutes have now won six of the seven scheduled games against Puget Sound this season, including outscoring the intracity rivals by a 64-20 margin.
The Lutes return to the diamond on Saturday, hosting Lewis & Clark College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
